this is not the case. this is, i guess, like saying because one tumblr user posted pedophilic content on their own blog, every blog on tumblr has pedophilia on it, and that we – completely unrelated and unaffiliated blog admins – have to go and remove the pedophilia ourselves – which we cannot do bc it’s not our blog – otherwise we’re letting it run rampant and don’t nothing about it … when we can’t do anything about it!

mastodon is a server software that anyone can use. people download the software, make their website and pay to host it online. the official mastodon server (mastodon.social) is not affiliated with any other server. the other servers are other websites. However, since all mastodon servers use the same framework, they can communicate. you have your local feed, which only shows posts in your server, and your federated one, which shows posts from other servers.

unfortunately since mastodons code is available for anyone to make their website… some people did make a server for pedophilic content. mastodon.social has it blocked and isolated from their server, they don’t host it, no content from it is displayed, no communication with it is possible at all. the users on it cannot talk to you and you cannot talk to them through mastodon.social. they’ve done the same thing with other servers that post illegal content. 

unfortunately though, since all these servers are Different Websites entirely, that also means if you were to join another mastodon server THEIR admins might not have the pedo one blocked bc these again are entirely different websites with their own rules and mod teams etc.

tl;dr 

mastodon is a server software anyone can use. each server is its own website built by different people, though you can interact with people from different servers bc they all use the same framework. the pedo server has been blocked and isolated from the only server officially ran by mastodon (mastodon.social). they have no control over what happens on other websites but they’ve done everything they can to keep these people away from their server
