These characters are literally gay caricatures, and the colour purple has been associated with gays and lesbians for well over a century and a half before David Jay made that cockamamie webshite.

Can you all just STOP appropriating gay culture and pretending that you necessarily belong in LGBT spaces, while obstinately refusing to learn LGBT history and pushing some high revisionist nonsense that has literally zero basis in fact?

I think because purple fabric was really expensive before. So to portray wealth and status only the rich people will wear purple clothing. That’s just my theory.

Violets were a 19th and early 20th century symbol for lesbian partners, and the colour purple and its variations, especially lavender, had at least a century of association with SGA:

• Lavender Scare documentary about the US government versus LGBT people in the 1950s. The title comes from the 1950s slur “lavender lads” to refer to gay men.
• Lavender Menace lesbian activist group
• Lavender marriage – wherein at least one partner is gay and concealing this from the public
• Lavender Panthers were a 1970s LGBT activist group.
• “streak of lavender” was 1920s/30s slang to refer to gay men (or suspecting a man was gay)
• Lavender in the LGBT wiki
• Mauve, another shade of purple, has close association with gays, and again, has four at least a century
• Oh then there’s the “lavender mafia” conspiracy theory…
• The term “pansy,” as in reference to the flower which is related to violets and that’s typically seen in shades of purple (though other colours are cultivated) has been used to refer to gay men, especially effetes and drag queens, since at least the 1920s.
• LGBT anarchists, largely the Gay Liberation Front, have used a symbol of a purple hand since the 1960s.
• There’s also the Lavender Language conference, but that was only founded in 1993 (though the name was given because of the long history of the colour lavender, among other shades of purple, being associated with LGBTs)
